-- Rules Make the Game Safe
Paintball began in the mid 80s as playful foresters would target each other after tagging trees. Cowboys also used paint capsules shot from air guns to sort cattle. Both groups claim to have originated the game. Seems most accurate to say that when a temptation exist, rough and tumble, hardworking men are not going to resist finding a good reason to laugh.

It didn't take long for the game to spring forth from the minds of highly imaginative individuals who saw the opportunity to bring the childhood fun of playing cowboys and Indians to life. Gun makers cleared their workbenches of black powder and turned to air. Pharmaceutical companies were excited about developing a new product which dealt with nothing more toxic than soap. Folks with more land than cattle became entrepreneurs with little more than a few directional signs and a dependable pickup to haul the ball.

Read the rules carefully
Mad Ivan's Paintball rules are based on safety requirements compliant to the Paintball Business Association. Rules are not capricious demands, they are to be understood and agreed to before participating.
  • Safety Rules

  • 1. Face mask ON at all times during play.
    2. Barrel plug/bag IN when not in play.
Read Rules #1 and #2 repeatedly, then read all the NO, NO RULES
    3. NO shooting within 20 feet of opponent. Shout "Surrender!" Comply to surrender
    4. NO shooting within 10 feet, absolutely!
    5. NO shooting or test firing in the common maskoff area.
    6. NO blind firing, see your target.
    7. NO aggressive physical contact or directed or abusive language.
    8. NO over shooting, once you have tagged a player, stop shooting.
    9. NO helping yourself to other's property.
    10. NO velocity speeds over 250 ft. per second.
    11. NO shooting referees.
    12. NO wiping, take the hit.
    13. NO alcohol before or during play
    14. NO wiping of the plastic mask lens with dirty, gritty, sandy towels or rags!
    15. NO drugs!
  • Game Rules:
    1. Listen to the game rules given by your Referee. All players must agree and understand game rules. Listen carefully. Ask questions. Never play until you know you know the game rules.
    2. When you are tagged or call yourself out, you are not back in until you meet the requirements of the game for re-entry. Some games allow for instant resurrection, some require you to set out until the game is completed.
    3. When tagged, yell HIT!, put the barrel plug in place, raise your marker over your head, continue to shout OUT until you have completely exited play or reached the resurrection point. Do NOT REMOVE your mask! By the way, there is often an impulse to remove the mask because you are personally out of play, resist it! Never remove or lift your mask when on the field of play.
    4. MIP will not sanction any game rules which jeopardize the safety of the player. Games which are strictly prohibited are Ironman, Chicken, Deadman and Suicide. Games with such names should always be suspect. Know the games rules before you begin. Never take stupid risk.

  • Maintain good sportsmanship, keep a positive attitude.
Failure to Consider these Rules will Result in a Suspension for Cause. Mad Ivan's Paintball reserves the right to remove any player from the game who, in MIP referee's opinion, is not abiding by the safety rules. A player with a bad attitude ruins the game for others and hurts the reputation of MIP games. Those individuals who are not playing by the game rules agreed to by the other players might be asked to leave a game, but are always eligible to join subsequent games. Players are required to play well with others.

Is paintball safe? National Paintball Business Association, the insurance firm which insures Mad Ivan's, reports that the last national census count collected in 1998 showed 2 injuries. Football exceeded 40,000 injuries during the same period. Basketball had over 20,000 and golf had 12,400 related injuries. Paintball is very safe.
Isn't there risk of injury? The only worrisome concern is eye injury. Many other sports have the same risk, but few are as well prepared with equipment and rules to protect the player. In order to play, a safety mask which covers the ears as well as the eyes is required by all insured fields.
Aren't all fields insured? No
Isn't paintball painful? A paintball hit is like a rubber band snap. A bruise is likely when using gelatin capsule balls, however, Mad Ivan’s field paint is the newly developed silicon shell ball which fragments on impact. MIP paint might still bruise, but it’s less likely than with the old gelatin type paintball. Gelatin balls are allowed only on BYOP nights, Sunday and Monday only.
Isn't paintball violent? No. Paintball is like a pie-fight or rubber-band-shoot. Paintball is not a contact sport. Paintball encourages honest sportsmanship. When the player is tagged, the evidence of the paintspot is unquestionable, therefore disputes are at a minimum. Violent activity is measured by the attitude of players. MIP will not tolerate a bad attitude. On the rare occasion when a player acts inappropriately, they're asked to leave.
What special equipment is needed? MIP provides all you need. Until a player is sure they want to be a regular player its best not to buy expensive equipment. The first purchase should be a high quality mask.
How safe is it to own a paintball gun? Paint marker guns are air guns which cannot be shot without an air tank. Parents can take charge of that tank. The gun is neither a toy or firearm. It is a very good device to teach young people the importance of gun safety.
Can paintball be shot in our backyard? NO! If you in an incorporated municipality the shooting of any sort of high speed propellant is against the law. Most cities have a fine of not less than $500. Depending on the judge, community service and a probation period might be included in the judgment. Paintball mischief can be dangerous. It is seldom destructive to property. The paint can be easily washed away. The obvious risk is harm to un-expecting and unprepared people and wild life.

Can we sign up for just a game or two to try it out? Yes, check our events calendar, and when you make your reservation let us know you are wanting to play only a couple of hours in order to decide if you want to continue. You will pay full price for rentals but we will charge you a short timeplay fee rather than the full event fee.
My kid insist on playing, but I don't like guns, what can I do? We suggest you have a talk with your youngster about your own concerns, then listen to why the youngster wants to play paintball. If their desire has nothing to do with violence, fear or hate, consider allowing them to play while you watch. Intention and attitude towards an activity is the measure of good or bad. Keep in mind, paintball is not totally painless. Unlike a video game, your youngster will experience an interaction with real consequences.
Is it OK to play on farm land outside the city? When folks get together to play without professional preparation, it's called renegade paintball. The risk are not great for the players when a game is well organized and played by rules created for safety. But it is risky for anyone who wanders into the play area. Dealing with the air fills is also risky. Without a ref who has no allegiance, game calls can become disagreements. Home owners insurance won't cover accidents. Overall, it's a real bad idea.
Can Mad Ivan's assist us with games on our own property? Mad Ivan's can provide a game set up on your property with designated play and safe areas, provide professional referees and all the correct gear needed for safe play.
