Mad Ivan's Scenario

^... Seven Marines beach Siapan and are immediately greeted with sniper fire. The soldier in the center has taken a hit. The fellow behind him appears to be dodging fire or could also have been struck.
Siapan was the fourth in the series of Mad ivan's Island Hopping Campaign.

Island Hopping Campaign

The Fourth Campaign

Missions were based on a study of events during the military campaign against Japanese forces in the Pacific shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
The U.S. commanders were in flux in the beginning months. Who is in charge was the big question.
As a consequence of these turf battles, the real battles on the ground became secondary.

As the players checked in, an omen met them. The little cricket perched on the Sword of Victory as if to mock the American forces.

The Japanese, mostly civilian, were depressed and frustrated.

The Battle

These peaceful island folks had not asked for war. For them, the world of political struggle was as far from them as the moon is from earth. They wanted their simple life back.
Their advantage was the mountainous terrain. They knew their little island well and use the terrain to their advantage. Marines discovered the strong will of simple folk could not be easily overcome.
Islanders frustrated the big American ideas by scale. Two tiny Japanese airfields had to be captured, held and rebuilt to accommodate the huge B-29.
The first hurdle was getting onto the island, then out of the valley of death.

As the sun rose Saturday morning, the Japanese proved the value of their symbolic name.

The Army of the Rising Sun took to the field thirty minutes prior to the American landing, placing themselves in positions of advantage.

As a result of the Jap's early rising the Marines were forced to call in air support to clear the landing beach.

Air strikes are managed by the referees based on chance and quantity of score risk the Marines were willing to take. Their strategy for incursion paid off as they survived to reach the tree line in less than 5 minutes with few casualties.
The Marines strong and quick entrance did not upset the Japanese who turn on their heels and headed beyond the clearing. The retreat surprised the ready Marines. The Japanese plan was unexpected but very simple.
Japanese made a field phone connection between the tower and their HQ immediately. They continued to carry out mission after mission, racking up an all time high score of 6,200 points!

The Rising Sun Rises

The Maid of Mito proved to have the heart of a Samurai. She commanded her troops with tactics of flank and shoot with small divisions. By continuously running missions between small fire fights, she proved that shot gun methods are the right way to conserve forces and still meet the score goals.
The American troops seemed to reflect the actual history of uncoordinated efforts as time and again, they would set a plan, then fall prey to an improvisation created to fend of the pesky hit and run tactics of the island forces.

Marine pride did not rest well as the sun set.

Players stayed up late comparing notes on the days play.

Marines rose with vengeance as a goal on Sunday morning. Armed with a remote control tank, they immediately blew the Japanese ammo dump. It was a good retaliation, but hardly enough to do much more than irritate the islanders.

The islanders won, It was a girl who began the battle but a woman who brought her team to victory.

^.......  Young players stayed up late on the balmy Spring night to watch the fire flies, clean their weapons and swap stories.

Any measure of positive thinking is useful on this island of complicated challenges.

American Military forces were in high competition. Generals battled for turf as the field grunt did their damndest to operate in a hostile environment that the native islanders were obviously more familiar with. The enemy wasn't always the guy in uniform. Civilians were as dangerous as the emperor's soldiers.
^...Games begin and end with handshakes. Honor is uppermost as a procedure for play. Players honor history and each other

Assignment:

Japanese islanders had to retreat to the heart of their small island. Their goal was to survive. It wasn't easy to keep a clean cave, and at the same time, explain in no uncertain terms that island citizens didn't need an Uncle Sam on Siapan.
Accomplish a successful landing on this remote island, then hold it to prevent the Japanese from using it for war resources.

Marines save face on Sunday

The American team lost the main
battle, but one battle does not a victory make. With determination and some really tricky tactics, the Marines outfoxed the Japanese and managed to leave the field on Sunday with their pride intact.

Assignment:
Survive the intrusion on the normally peaceful island life and organize stealth residence. Drawing round eyes into the valley of death may work as well this time as it did historically.
